Donqian Lake tourism and holiday resort management committee was founded in August, 2001, with a planning area of 230 square kilometers, and a management range of 145 square kilometers. It is now a provincial-level scenic recreation and tourist holiday area, and has been awarded with the title of “2007 China Popular Tourism Holiday Destination” in 2006. The location of Dongqian Lake promotes the formation of a prime tourism market in Changjiang Delta Area where Dongqian Lake Resort enjoys highly-developed economy, densely-inhabited population and conveniently-connected traffic. Not far from the resort is Ningbo, which witnessed high-paced economy, thus forming the central point in the tourism market of Eastern Zhejiang Province. Convenient traffic conditions enhance the development
in this tourism market. With ten minutes drive, people can get from Dong Qian Lake to Ningbo downtown area or Lishe international airport, and another ten minutes drive can access people to the highway Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo and Tongsan highway. After Hangzhou bay bridge will be completed in 2008, the distance between Ningbo and shanghai will be dramatically shortened.
Covering an area of 19.98 square kilometers, Dongqian Lake was formed during a geological period long ago. With the charm of Xi Zi and the majesty of Tai Hu, it is the biggest natural fresh water lake in Zhejiang province, with a reputation as “the number one coastal lake in China.” Dongqian Lake is surrounded by mountains, comprising a unique natural geological variety of formations. Its moderate climate provides a comfortable environment with an average annual temperature of 15.4℃. According to ancient records, the area around Donqian Lake has a history of almost 1260 years. A variety of talents and cultures have originated here, making the area a 'historical and cultural artery' of China. Buddhism, stone carvings, irrigation works, wealth, love, and folklore culture create great points of interest for local and overseas scholars, trustees and tourists.
Since its establishment in 2001, the Dongqian Lake tourist area has witnessed a rapidly growing economy. Its GDP reached 1.674 billion RMB in 2006, following a consistent annual increase of 21.8%. Moreover, it has welcomed around 1370 thousand tourists and achieved a total tourist revenue of 0.591 billion RMB in 2006, an increase of 35% compared with the previous year. The goal is to be able to welcome 3 million tourists by 2010, transforming Dongqian Lake into an international travel destination and an important international conference center of Eastern China.
“With a monumental project, planning must come first.” Over 50 million Yuan has been spent on 30 projects around Dongqian Lake, all of which employ highly systematic approaches, scientific expertise and operation, and advanced concepts through which have been planned. This plan focuses on establishing a complete framework for the promotion of history, culture and ecology at Dongqian Lake.
Since its establishment 6 years ago, the Dongqian Lake Travel Resort council has invested almost 15 billion RMB, in accordance with the general plan and target requirements, on complete and comprehensive development, planning design, foundational construction, environment conservation, tourism development, and business investment activities, all of which have commenced and already achieved milestones.
Supplementary facilities in the district have already been completed. Due to the abundance of historical remains and natural resources in the area, a number of tourist projects have been confirmed. At present, the finished projects include an 18-hole Qixin Golf Club, which meets international standards; Younger Zoo, covering an area of 1900mu and home to 10 thousand animals, among which are 200 species; a 10000mu tea garden; Fuquanshan scenic spot, known for its magnificent views of the lake and surrounding hills; Small Putuo scenic spot, closely connected with Xiayu Temple and Taogong Bank; Southern Song stone-carving park, which exhibits the long history of the Shi family and the rise and fall of the southern Song Dynasty; and Shashan village resort hotel, which integrates the essence of oriental gardens with the charm of gardens found in the south.. Other tourist projects of great importance are already well underway that will strengthen the leisure industry of Dongqian Lake. Borui international conference center, with an investment of 0.1 billion US dollars and Erlingshan Spring Hotel, with an investment of 0.2 billion RMB, are predicted to open in 2008. Dongqian Lake international education forum, with an investment of 0.1 billion RMB, will act as a multi-functional cultural center and Oriental Flower Exposition Garden, with an investment of 0.6 billion RMB by Nanyuan Group, will be opened in the near future.
